Insomniac’s latest update for Marvel’s Wolverine addresses its controversial scent trails

Marvel’s Wolverine has caused something of a stir, and not because its claw-based violence is a step up from the relatively family-friendly Marvel’s Spider-Man. Out now on PS5, it’s been criticized by some for including ‘scent trails’ which point you to a target and now developer Insomniac Games has addressed this perceived issue with a new hotfix.

With quips like like “Jean Grey’s fart gas”, some fans of Marvel’s Wolverine have requested they be able to disable scent trails. However, as of update v.01.001.005, that’s not an option. What the hotfix does do (apart from fixing various other bugs) is make the scent trails stand out less.

“This hotfix adjusts the presentation of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators, including reduced opacity to make these visuals less intense,” read the patch notes for Marvel’s Wolverine. So, while scent trails are still around, and still compulsory, they’ll be less prominent post-patch.

The patch notes also confirm that Insomniac is also “..exploring toggleable options for a future update.” That doesn’t mean it’s definitely going to happen, but it’s a positive development for those who dislike the game’s scent trails.

Why not just make scent trails toggleable right now? We suspect it’s because it’s a fundamental change to gameplay. While Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t an open-world game, you’ve still got a degree of freedom and Insomniac likely doesn’t want players just wandering the wilderness, even if that’s not an unfamiliar experience to Logan.
