Could you eat a mermaid? Ask that question at your average magic-fancier convention and you’re sure to get some funny looks. But it’s the subject of Mermaids are Seafood, an upcoming PC visual novel that is set to take players down some weird and disturbing avenues.

From solo dev Lyyycaena, Mermaids are Seafood casts you as an employee of a company that, in a world where these half-fish, half-human creatures are classed as an invasive species, serves them up for lunch. If that premise wasn’t unsettling enough, your employee has willingly deleted some of their own memories, an issue that definitely won’t bite you in the rear later.

Supposedly, the game’s mermaids are just as willing to chow down on humans, though we wouldn’t be surprised if that’s just corporate propaganda to make people feel less guilty about chowing down on Aquaman’s pals. Or maybe the optional romance element will end up with you as a mermaid’s main course.

What promises to make the Mermaids are Seafood even more unsettling, pushing it further into horror territory, is that there’s a management element too. Instead of tutting from the sidelines, you’ll have to serve up mermaids yourself, to a collection of hungry restaurant-goers. If you grew up watching The Little Mermaid, H2O, Splash or any other mermaid-centric show or movie, you may want to give this a miss.

But if you have a yen for a seriously strange visual novel, with 11 different endings, this game could be well worth watching out for. It’s pencilled in for a December 7th release and if you want an early taste, you can download Mermaids are Seafood’s Steam demo now.
