The NEOGEO AES+ retro console has been delayed by nearly a year

If you were looking forward to snagging a NEOGEO AES+ in time for Christmas, I’ve got bad news. Plaion Replai, which was behind this retro console, has confirmed that it’s been delayed until September 16th, 2027. That’s a whopping ten months until you’ll be able to get your hands on it.
As spotted by VGC, Plaion Replai’s press release states, “…unprecedented worldwide demand for memory chips, driven by investment in AI infrastructure, has created well documented industry-wide supply constraints. …PLAION REPLAI has chosen to take additional time to secure the component supply that is now needed to meet the demand of pre-order customers and a substantially larger worldwide release.”
The appeal of the Neo Geo AES+ is that it isn’t just an emulator, as the earlier Neo Geo X was. It’s an HDMI-compatible upgrade of the original Neo Geo AES, using comparable chips, to the point where it’s compatible with original Neo Geo AES carts. The games you can purchase are, like the original carts, also chip-based.
Now, it’s still happening, and pre-orders will still be honoured, but instead of November 12th, 2026, it’ll be arriving on September 16th, 2027. There were rumblings earlier in the year that the console was delayed, but those were scotched by Plaion Replai as a misunderstanding.
Disappointed? I know I am, I’d already pre-ordered mine, and I’ve now cancelled. Still, that’s more money to spend on Evercade cartridges and controllers. The good news, at least, is that when the Neo Geo AES+ does launch, it should be in plentiful supply and not subject to eBay scalpers.
