Matt Berry joins Skyrim as a piece of talking IKEA furniture

Matt Berry and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a match made in New York Citayyy, but I never would have imagined the circumstances under which the velvet-voiced What We Do in the Shadows star would join Bethesda’s open-world action-RPG.

Bethesda and IKEA (purveyor of furniture and meatballs) have joined forces to release a free Skyrim Creation, where you join forces with a sentient storage unit known as Kallax Storageborn. Yes, it’s a pretty blatant advertisement for IKEA’s wares, the Kallax unit in particular, but it’s Matt Berry’s dulcet tones that take this freebie to the next level.

Rather than having Berry’s shelf self just spawn next to you, you’re sent on a long quest to ‘Storereach’ Skyrim’s equivalent of an IKEA. After a little work, you assemble Kallax and Berry begins hamming it up, boasting of his legendary storage capabilities. And, as you can see in the below trailer, he also becomes a companion, aiding you on your travels.

You shouldn’t expect your furniture pal to be much good in a fight. While my own real-life Kallax unit served me well, as confirmed by IKEA’s own website, it includes “honeycomb paper filling”. No doubt a Draugr’s sword would make short work of that.

But, as any Skyrim player knows, your real enemy is encumbrance; all those dragon bones really mount up, and Kallax is more than capable of carrying that burden. He can also be summoned by a shout, even when you already have a companion. Yes, it’s very, very silly (and advertising for IKEA) but this is a game where you can shout someone off a cliff and get launched into orbit by a giant.

If you’re on Xbox or PC, you can download Kallax Storageborn from Skyrim’s Creations menu, absolutely free. I’ve yet to check the Switch 2, but I can confirm this mod is currently not available on PlayStation 5.
