Hit the road and and the undead with post-apocalyptic survival game In the Van

What would you do in the event of a zombie uprising? If the answer is ‘pile into a motorhome and hit the road’, then upcoming post-apocalyptic survival game In the Van could be right up your pock-marked, shambler-laden street.

The Zombie Survival Guide does frown on the use of buses, RVs and their ilk, but In the Van (coming to PC) is sufficiently intriguing that I’m happy to overlook Max Brooks’ objections. And, going by what developer Cosmic Tofu has revealed so far, your protagonist will wisely be steering clear of major cities.

Cosmic Tofu says In the Van is “For everyone who plays Project Zomboid like it’s Stardew Valley”. Mowing down the dead is just one small part of the game. You’ll be fishing, cooking, growing crops and generally setting up home wherever you park.

At least, you will in the short term. You’ll also have to defend yourself from the undead and we suspect their numbers may increase the longer you stay in one place. Fortunately, you can upgrade your vehicle, as well as your defences, to make survival a more likely prospect.

You’ll also discover phones and other trinkets, allowing you to uncover clues about their owners, leading you to hidden locations. And, while I don’t necessarily need to know why the dead rose, I’m a sucker for bite-sized zombie survival stories (I still have hope that More Tales of the Walking Dead will happen, despite three years of radio silence).

Throw in a pixel-art aesthetic, and you’ve got a game that’s worth keeping an eye on. Unfortunately, it doesn’t currently have a release date, but you can wishlist In the Van on Steam now. You can also follow two-person developer Cosmic Tofu on Twitter.
