Sony confirms God of War Laufey will be getting a physical release

Can’t wait to literally get your hands on God of War Laufey, the next entry in the main God of War series? Then you’ll be happy to hear that this action-adventure, featuring Kratos’s late wife, is getting a physical release.
Sony has caused one hell of a stir by announcing that, as of 2028, new PlayStation games will no longer be released on discs. The push-back has been considerable, though I’m not convinced that it’s enough to steer Sony from its current course.
The Sony-owned developer of God of War Laufey, Santa Monica Studios, has made a point of confirming that the game will be available on disc. It’s still possible that it may require a download to play, but that hasn’t been the case with previous God of War games.
This also all but confirms that God of War Laufey will be arriving in 2027 and, as a fan of the soft-rebooted series, I’ve got my fingers crossed for some kind of special collector’s edition, with Faye in a suitably dynamic, butt-kicking pose.
The responses to the news have generally been positive, with many requesting that Santa Monica pass the message upwards, vastly overestimating how much influence the developer has on its owner. As time has proved, the corporate power structure does not work in that direction.
If you’re heading to San Diego Comic Con, there’s a whole God of War Laufey panel happening, including appearances from Deborah Ann Woll (Faye) and Christopher Judge (Kratos). Don’t count on the latter having a major role in the game, though: this is Faye’s story. You can find out more about the SDCC God of War panel here.
