Out in September, Marvel’s Wolverine looks positively brutal – and we can’t wait

During Tuesday’s State of Play, we got an extended look at gameplay from the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine. It’s been a long time coming – it feels like we’ve been waiting for news on Wolverine for ages – but finally, it’s just around the corner. With a release date set for September, it’s only a few more months until we can get our hands on Insomniac Games’ next foray into the Marvel universe, and we can’t wait. Not least because it looks utterly brutal.
Yeah, forgive us, but we can’t resist a bit of blood and guts in an action game. It’s to be expected, really: with claws like he does, Wolverine isn’t going to simply leave his adversaries slightly shaken – he’s going to shred ’em to pieces. And in the gameplay trailer shown off during State of Play, we saw plenty of it. If you’re squeamish, you might want to plan for something else to play in September. But if you’re not? You’re in for a real treat.
Like Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man series, Wolverine in a single-player adventure game. But while Spider-Man was open world, Wolverine looks to be more cinematic and narrative-focused, with more emphasis on action than exploration. Given how tight the action looks in the trailer, that’s certainly not a bad thing. We saw Wolverine jump onto moving vehicles, tear into enemies, leap great distances and a whole lot more.
Watch the extended gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine below:
Also like Marvel’s Spider-Man that came before it, Marvel’s Wolverine is based on the comic book iteration of Wolverine – also known as James ‘Logan’ Howlett – and the story presented here is wholly original. It doesn’t retell anything seen in the comics or movies, but many elements will be familiar to fans. In the trailer, we see Logan hunt down the Reavers, a for-hire militia group that has captured a group of innocent mutants. Logan frees them, but obviously this is just the tip of the iceberg: despotic billionaire Bolivar Trask believes in human superiority, and so all mutants are under threat. Not if Wolverine has anything to do with it.
Helped along by a rather impressive repertoire of skills, it’s up to Wolverine to put a stop to Trask and the militia groups working for him. You’ll be able to stalk enemies for a stealth attack, or rush up to them with fast and fluid movements. You’ll also have access to more advanced combat moves known as ‘Techniques’, allowing you to deal greater damage.
Needless to say, we’re looking forward to getting our hand son Marvel’s Wolverine, and with it launching on PlayStation 5 on 15th September, we don’t have to wait too much longer. Pre-order today and you’ll get access to an exclusive Classic Brown suit, a set of Reflective Claws and an additional Technique Point. Opt for the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game and you’ll get five suits and five claws and three Technique Points on top of the pre-order bonuses.
