Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks has been available on PC for just over a year now, starting out life as a free-to-play title before it was decided that it would be better as a paid title instead. Now it’s available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, too, and if you’re a fan of vehicular mayhem you should consider picking it up, even if you’re not into Warhammer.

If nothing else, Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks lets you drive fast and blast your opponents with a range of weapons. What more could a car combat fan want? In fact, the only thing here that may leave some players wanting is the lack of a single-player campaign. But there is sort of one. You see, included in the game are multiple WAAAGH! Paths, and by playing the game and gaining experience you can unlock of wealth of customisation items, vehicles, boosters, and more. Better yet, you can still make progress playing private matches against bots.

This is a game designed around multiplayer, however, so no matter how much fun it is playing with computer-controlled opponents, it is better playing against other humans. Still, whichever you choose, there two main match types here: Deff Rally and Kill Konvoy.

The first of the two, Deff Rally, pits two teams against each other, tasking them with racing to capture a point on the map, then racing through multiple checkpoints, all the while battling it out with guns, bombs and more. After this is repeated numerous times, with lulls in the racing action for some pure carnage, a final race to the finish line commences. It’s fast, it’s frantic, and it’s a whole lot of fun.

The other match type available, Kill Konvoy, is a bit more tactical, again splitting players into two teams but this time tasking them with escorting a giant mech called a Stompa to the finishing line. Each team has its own Stompa, which steadily makes its way across the map, leaving players to fight over bombs which spawn. If a team takes control of the bomb and manages to carry it to the opposing team’s Stompa, its progress will be set back a little. So, if you want to secure your team’s success, you’ll want to grab and deliver as many bombs as you can.

Regardless of the match type you mainly find yourself drawn to, a range of outrageous vehicles are available, each with their own strengths and weaknesses as well as a range of skills. You might opt for something small and fast if you really like racing, but if you want to focus on destruction, something slower but meatier might be more your thing. These vehicles can be customised, too, allowing you to express yourself and fine tune your loadout.

Throw in a range of custom maps and racetracks to blaze around in a mode called Kustom Rally, as well as a robust level editor that allows you to create and share your own creations, and Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks has a lot to offer considering its modest price. So, like I said, if you love vehicular combat, you probably ought to give it a try. And those who love both vehicular combat and all things Warhammer will undoubtedly be in heaven.

Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
