How to Unsocket and Remove Gems from Items in Diablo 4

Read on to find out how to remove gems from items – a process known as unsocketing – in Diablo 4.
As you play through Diablo 4, you’ll pick up a lot of gems around Sanctuary. You’ll find them in chests, and they’ll drop from enemies after you’ve defeated them in battle. They come in different types – rubies, diamonds and emeralds amongst others – and each one provides a different buff to the item it’s socketed into. But how do you unsocket, or remove a gem from an item in Diablo 4?
Before you can put a gem into an item, it first needs to have a socket. You can read about adding sockets into items here, if your item didn’t already have one. Adding a gem is easy: you can do it right from your inventory. Just select the gem, then select the item you want to put it into. Unsocketing a gem, however, is a little trickier. To remove a gem from an item in Diablo 4, you’ll need to pay a visit to a jeweller.
You’ll find jewellers in every major town in the game. The first you’ll come across is in Kyovashad: look for a diamond-shaped symbol on the map if you’re not sure where to find them. From there, use your shoulder buttons to tab across to the “unsocket” option. From there, you can select the item you want to unsocket.
However: to remove gems from items in Diablo 4 is an expensive affair. The exact price will depend on the level of the gem and the rarity of the item. It’s not a cheap process. Unless you’re desperate to use the same gem in something else, or replace the gem with a better one, we’d recommend simply leaving – especially if you’ve still some way to go and are likely to find a better item before long anyway.
