Learn what happens when you die in Diablo 4 with our helpful guide.

Being a hero isn’t easy. In the world of Diablo 4, death can arrive at any moment, especially as you push further into the game and crank up the difficulty level. For most players it’s inevitable at some point, and the repercussions vary depending on how you’ve set up your game and what activity you’re currently engaging in. So, what happens when you die in Diablo 4?

Standard Mode

If you’re playing with a standard character, death in Diablo 4 is simply an inconvenience. When you die, you get taken back to your last checkpoint, which could be a few steps away or at the beginning of the area you’re in. More troublesome is that your gear also loses durability. So, if you die too many times in an area, your gear may break, stripping you of the bonuses they impart. Travel back to a Blacksmith to repair your gear, but be warned – it can get expensive later in the game.

With the world of Diablo 4 being populated with other players, however, there is a way to cheat death when playing with a standard character. If someone comes along and revives you, you won’t have to go back to a checkpoint, and your items won’t lose durability. Needless to say, it’s hugely beneficial to play Diablo 4 with others as part of a group. Although random players may help you too. Just be aware that during some activities, such as Nightmare Dungeons, players can only die so many times before failing.

Hardcore Mode

Where death really should be feared in Diablo 4 is when creating a Hardcore character. When playing with a Hardcore character, if you die in Diablo 4 they’re gone for good. All of the items they had equipped are lost forever, and the character can no longer be used in any mode. If they were above level 10 when they died you’ll at least be able to view them in the Hall of Fallen Heroes, though.

There are a couple of ways to cheat death in Hardcore mode in Diablo 4, such as finding and using a Scroll of Escape, or by crafting and using an Elixir of Cheat Death. But still, if you’re playing in Hardcore mode it’s a good idea to prioritise survivability at all costs, and make sure you have a stable internet connection
