HBO’s The Last of Us will likely end with Season 3, but which ending will it get?

The Last of Us HBO Show

The third season of HBO’s The Last of Us is about to begin filming and, according to a recent Deadline interview, it’s very likely to be the show’s final season, tying up Ellie and Abby’s story. Be warned, I’m going to get into mild spoilers for the show and game here.

Unlike the original game, which hopped between Ellie and Abby, HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 is shown from Ellie’s perspective, with Season 3 being Abby’s tale. The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered has also received an update which lets you play it in this order.

Quizzed about whether the show would be ending with its ‘final’ season, HBO CEO Casey Bloys said, “It certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them.”

I’d love a The Last of Us anthology show with more episodes like Season 1’s Long, Long Time, which told of Bill and Frank’s post-apocalyptic romance. There’s no indication that’s about to happen. However, it’s got me wondering, just which conclusion is The Last of Us Season 3 going to have?

No, you’ve not missed out on a second secret The Last of Us Part 2 ending. But, without getting too deep into spoiler territory, it’s as if there are two stopping points for the story. The first is as close to a happy ending as The Last of Us can get and, at that point, we were sure the credits were about to roll.

But then, there’s another stretch of gameplay. It feels like nothing so much as a chunk of DLC, an optional add-on for those who hate happiness in all its forms. You know, something to play in between throwing unicorns into wood chippers.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good downer ending, but this one just felt tacked on. This could be HBO/Naughty Dog’s chance to fix that though given that the series has largely followed the game, often down to specific scenes, I’m not getting my hopes up.

Whatever the case, it’ll be a while till fans get to see the conclusion to Abby and Ellie’s on-screen story. The Last of Us Season 3 starts filming this month and I don’t expect it to arrive before 2027.
