A new Xbox has been announced – and it’s made out of bricks
Forget about Microsoft’s Project Helix; there’s a new Xbox console on the way, and this one has stole our heart. Well, it’s not actually a console at all: it’s a model of one. Mattel Brick Shop is releasing a 1:1 scale model of the original Xbox. It’s made up of 3,509 pieces, and it looks brilliantly realistic.
Mattel Brick Shop – previously MEGA, running alongside Mattel’s kid-friendly Mega Bloks brand – is no stranger to releasing Xbox-branded toys. We’ve previously had a buildable Xbox 360, and there’s been a series of Halo-themed models, too. But this original Xbox is by far the most impressive. Not only does it look the part, but it also has a host of neat features.
Along with the console, the Mattel Brick Shop Microsoft Xbox features an original ‘Duke’ controller and three dioramas based on classic Xbox games: Psychonauts, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Halo. But the most notable features here are the interactive elements of the Xbox. You can open the console and trigger the original Xbox opening sequence, and pressing buttons on the controller will activate light and sound effects for each diorama.
The bad news? As you’d probably expect, the set doesn’t come cheap. When it releases on 16th October, it’ll cost £295/$329.99. Given the size of the set it’s not surprising, but it is on the expensive side. Especially given that Mattel/Mega Bloks doesn’t have the same collector’s appeal as LEGO.
Still, we must admit we are pretty won over by this one. It may be some 20 years since we last touched an original Xbox, but this model will act as the perfect tribute to an era gone by.
You can pre-order the Xbox building set from the official Mattel Brick Shop website.
