HeroQuest is back.. again! This classic fantasy board game was reissued after nearly 30 years away and now it’s becoming a turn-based video game, dubbed HeroQuest: Digital Edition. And, while the full title won’t arrive until 2027, you’ll have the chance to playtest it soon.

The physical edition of HeroQuest ate up a good chunk of my childhood, including all the time I spent trying (and failing) to paint the figures. I’ve been sorely tempted by the 2021 re-release so I’m 100% on board with it becoming a Steam game.

A turn-based dungeon-crawler, HeroQuest: Digital Edition will cast players as a band of heroes, a barbarian, dwarf, elf and wizard, as they set out to foil evil wizard Zargon. You can play solo, commanding the whole party, or, via online co-op, one player can take control of each hero.

And, if you know someone who loves to be the bad guy, they can take on the role of Zargon. I’ve got my fingers crossed you’ll also be able to do this in single-player mode, but developer Nomad Games hasn’t confirmed it. You can watch the trailer below to see the game in action, accompanied by some suitably cheesy voice acting.

Nomad Games has previously adapted a number of card games and board games including a digital edition version of Talisman. If the latter is anything to go by, you can expect Nomad to release HeroQuest’s many, many expansions as paid DLC. However, the game will include a quest editor so you can create your own challenges.

HeroQuest: Digital Edition is set for a 2027 PC release. You can wishlist it on Steam now and sign up for a closed playtest which is coming soon.
