Cities: Skylines is getting the LEGO treatment

Announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live last night was something that we’re amazed hasn’t already been made. Paradox Interactive and Iceflake Studios revealed that LEGO Skylines is in development; a spin-off to the popular Cities: Skylines city-building franchise where everything is made out of LEGO.

It seems such an obvious marriage, and yet we’ve had to wait until the year of our lord 2026 for a LEGO city builder to materialise. And with the success of the Cities: Skylines brand, it makes sense that Paradox Interactive would be the company to take this on.

LEGO Skylines is described as a “cozy, customizable city-builder,” so we assume it may be a little more easy-going than its brethren. That said, you’ll still need to think about infrastructure such as electricity and water, so it’s not as simple as slapping down a LEGO blueprint.

But the 45-second trailer released last night doesn’t give a great deal away, so we’ll have to wait a while to find out exactly what playing LEGO Skylines will entail. We did glimpse some buildings released as LEGO sets in the trailer, though, so we’re excited about populating a city with our favourite modular LEGO Icons and Creator sets.

Watch the trailer for LEGO Skylines below:

Here’s what game director Lasse Liljedahl had to say about it:

“Most of us at Iceflake grew up building LEGO sets, and we’ve carried that passion with us to
this day. As huge fans, we were incredibly excited to get the opportunity to combine our
creative drive with everything we’ve learned over the years building deep management and
simulation games. With LEGO Skylines, we want to turn city building into a more personal experience, where only your imagination limits what kind of cities you can build. We can’t wait to see how players bring their dreams to life in it.”

Sadly, there’s no release date for LEGO Skylines yet, but it’s set to release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Needless to say, we’ll be keeping a keen eye out for more news and announcements, so watch this space.
