Is There a Secret Cow Level in Diablo 4?
“There is no secret cow level”, previous loading screens of Diablo have said. It was a lie. But is there a secret cow level in Diablo 4?
It was a bit of a running joke through Diablo 2 and 3 that “there is no secret cow level”. Of course, both games did have a secret cow level: a place filled with bovine beasts for you to slaughter to get your hands on a whole load of good loot. It’s always been one of our favourite places to visit, and so we’ve been wondering, just as you are, whether there’ll be a secret cow level in Diablo 4.
We’ve got bad news: it seems that, at least at launch, there won’t be a secret cow level in Diablo 4. As per an interview published on Wowhead, game director Joe Shely and Diablo general manager Rod Fergusson have stated that the nature of the cow level doesn’t fit with the “grounded” nature of Diablo 4’s world.
They did go on to say, however, that over time, their approach to Diablo 4 may “loosen up”. And so, if there is no cow level right now, it doesn’t mean there won’t be in the future.
That’s if we believe what Fergusson and Shely have to say, however. “There is no cow level” is something of a Diablo mantra. And so we’re not quite convinced that, somewhere deep within Diablo 4, there’s not already a secret cow level in there.
In our 70+ hours with the game so far, however, we haven’t found any trace of one. And this is such a big game that it’s going to take a while to find it, even if there is. Watch this space, however. If there does happen to be a secret cow level, we’ll update. But to save yourself disappointment, assume that there isn’t.
