Xbox One X Loads Games Up to 20 Seconds Faster Than an Xbox One S

Xbox One X

Yes, we’re wax lyrical about the Xbox One X – it’s hard not to be, really.

The extra power that the console offers meant that loading times were bound to be faster, but we weren’t sure just how much faster. So we did a few tests. With an Xbox One X and an Xbox One S set up side-by-side, we simultaneously loaded a number of games installed on Western Digital 4TB external hard drives and recorded the loading time for each.

We expected the X to be the odd few seconds faster here and there, but we didn’t expect it to be significantly faster in many cases. Forza Horizon 3 loaded from the menu into the game 20 seconds faster on Xbox One X, as did Grand Theft Auto 5. Assassin’s Creed Origins loaded eight seconds faster, while Cuphead loaded twice as fast.

Of course, not every game had such amazing results. However, most of the games we’ve tested so far loaded at least a second or two faster – but not enough to notice if you’re not actively timing. There were a couple of instances where games loaded at the exact same speed, and in the case of Gears of War 4, it actually loaded a fraction of a second faster on Xbox One S (though we didn’t have precise timings for this one). We presume this may be to do with the extra detail that’s available on Xbox One X thanks to its patch.
