Not only is Friday a day to celebrate the oncoming weekend, get a takeaway and go out for a couple of bevvies with your friends and family, for us here at GameSpew it’s time for #FreeGameFriday. That’s right Spewers; it’s the best day of the week.
This week’s choice is The Darkside Detective, a new contender in #FreeGameFriday, and it was entirely unexpected. Developed by Galway-based DoomCube, The Darkside Detective is a pixelated micro-adventure game where our protagonist, Detective Francis McQueen, dabbles in all things occult and evil. This sampler, the original demo, is a short taste of what’s to come as we have to find clues to solve the case…but with a bit of a twist. Sadly it is still in development so we’ll have to wait a little bit longer for an update but I, personally, don’t mind being patient. It’s a game with a simplistic style and some genuine humour.
Throughout the adventure you can interact with objects and people to get an observation. Detective McQueen has a lot to say about a little but it’s not without a funny comment or joke. By clicking on my favourite, Office Dooley, you can get his view in all its simplistic wit on pretty much everything and it changes with each environment. It’s currently being developed for PC, tablets and smart phones and DoomCube run a nice little website where you can keep up to date on their progress – something I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on – and is due for release sometime later this year.
It’s a quick download and available to play online in a Unity web player. As opposed to what you may think from the description it’s certainly NOT a horror game, so those of you who are more sensitive you’re still clear to play this little gem. It’s more X-Files than Exorcist. So let us know how you get on in the comments below, we always love to hear your views and as always: speak to you next week, folks.
