Massive Rocket League update coming June 20

Psyonix continue to prove why they are one of the best – and nicest – in the business with another free update to their smash hit Rocket League. Arriving in just over a week, the update features two new maps, over 20 new items, a “trade-in” system for said items and more!

The update itself is called “Neo Tokyo” named after the major part of the update – the new Neo Tokyo map. The stunning and flashy map is shown off in a new trailer below and launches for both standard and ranked modes. The base map itself is a huge graphical update on the “Underpass” map – that’s the one with the platforms at each side – that has been available in the experimental Rocket Labs section of the game. To make up for this, Rocket Labs itself receives a new map, “Pillars” which seperates the stadium into three lanes with two large walls – sounds fun!

The update also introduces the new Trade-In system along with over 20 new “Rare” and “Very Rare” items. You may have noticed that up until now many of the items you receive after matches have set rarities that don’t do all that much – well now with the new trade-in system, they do! The system allows you to trade in five items of any one rarity to receive a single item of the next rarity. Also being introduced are new “Painted” and “Certified” items. Painted items are simply just different coloured versions of already existing wheels and toppers. Certified items are items that track a certain stat; for example a Sniper Wizard Hat is a Wizard Hat which will now track how many Long-Range goals you score, when you reach a set amount, it will upgrade and become a Skillfull Wizard Hat then an Incredible Wizard Hat and so on.

The new update also signals the beginning for Season 3 of ranked competitive play. Players that competed in ranked modes will receive an exclusive Rocket Trail – like last season’s exclusive Hats – that reflect the highest rank they reached and all ranks will be reset.

Also coming – Psyonix just don’t stop do they? – are new quick-chat options as well as post-game celebrations. There are 19 new quick-chat options coming including “Holy Cow!” and “Whew.” which can be customised at will. Being introduced is a new post-game celebration screen for the winning team which allows the winners to show off by spinning or doing a flip. The screen also shows particular stats for individual players if they earned any; “Speed Demon” for using the most boost or “Traitor” for scoring an own goal.

Also announced are four new DLC cars; two themed around Neo Tokyo, the “Esper” and “Masumune” and two cars from the original game Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, the “Marauder” and “Aftershock”. The four cars will be available early, exclusively to owners of the physical edition of Rocket League available on June 24 in Europe and July 5 in North America. Otherwise, each car will be available individually for $1.99 on July 18.
