As is the norm every year, some studios decide to show off their new titles early so it doesn’t get caught up in the tide of excitement that is E3. Cyanide Studios’ Styx: Shards of Darkness is the latest to receive an early E3 trailer.
Styx: Shards of Darkness is a sequel to 2014’s Styx: Master of Shadows which itself, was a sequel to Of Orcs of Men but took place before – which makes it a prequel. Confused yet? It doesn’t matter too much as the series – especially since lead character Styx took over – never takes itself completely seriously, as is shown in the trailer.
Styx: Master of Shadows was a rough around the edges stealth game that many found praise for as it planted its roots in classic stealth games such as Thief. As such, and unlike many modern stealth games, if you got caught it often meant death – or at least having to run away and hide. Combat was difficult – possibly in part thanks to its clunkiness – but meant getting caught should be avoided and forced you to use Styx’s abilities and the large, creative maps to your advantage. It had its problems of course, as mentioned combat was clunky, the very cool levels began to repeat a little too often and overall it could have used just a little more polish.
But then that it exactly what sequels are for right? So far, no actual gameplay has been released for Styx: Shards of Darkness but we do have today’s trailer to get us warmed up and up to date on the new story. Hopefully, if Cyanide can improve on an already good formula, stealth fans may just have an unexpected hit in the waiting.
