Echo is a sci-fi game which reacts to how you play

Echo is the first upcoming game from Danish studio Ultra Ultra. A third person sci-fi action/puzzler, the twist being that all the enemies (Echoes) are doppelgangers of your character and react and change to how you play the game. As you try to make your way through “The Palace” you may decide to shoot the Echoes as they find you, now, after the next blackout the Echoes will try to shoot you.

It’s a very interesting concept and one which will go into much more depth that I just said. But basically, “If you run, soon the Echoes will get faster. If you sneak, they will get stealthier. If you shoot, they will start to shoot back.” This means that while Echo may be a stealth game, if you decide to play it as an action game it will, in theory, change and become one.

The way the Palace changes is through a “Blackout” which occurs every so often. During the Blackout the Palace becomes dark and inactive and everything you have done in the previous cycle is studied and made into what you will face next time around. “The experience is one of being up against your own choices from the last blackout-cycle, giving you a way of shaping the game from cycle to cycle.”

Ultra Ultra is made up of eight developers – many of whom come from IO Interactive, the developers behind the many Hitman games. So you can be sure there is talent behind Echo which is set to be released sometime next year. Another noteable thing is the game’s art-style – visible in the gameplay trailer below – made in Unreal Engine 4. And as expected from the latest iteration of the Unreal Engine, it looks very good.

Echo is set to release sometime in Spring 2017 for PC and unnanounced consoles.
