Stylish Tokyo 42 is coming next year

From a single screenshot you can see how charming and stylish Smac Games’ Tokyo 42 is. From the incredibly colourful aesthetic to the zoomed-out camera it just looks very, very cool. Described by the developers as “Syndicate-meets-Monument Valley-meets-Worms” the gameplay itself seems as kooky and eccentric as the art-style.
In Tokyo 42 you play as a character “drawn into a cutthroat world of assassins in futuristic Tokyo”. Going through the game, taking missions from shady handlers you build funds and grow your underworld reputation. The perspective itself looks isometric, and although it is, it throws an interesting spanner in the works, the camera can turned and rotated allowing you to access somewhere that may have been otherwise inaccessible – almost like Fez.
Tokyo 42 may just seem like a package of style over substance but rest assured there is plenty of substance here, in both its open world single-player and its Assassin’s Creed-like multiplayer. The single player is full of side quests, weapons and secret areas. With equipment ranging from pistols to katanas to things much, much more absurd Tokyo 42 makes sure that the killing never becomes boring. The game also has multiplayer modes in which players are given outfits to blend into the crowd – a la Assassin’s Creed – before everything descends into madness.
Tokyo 42 arrives sometime in 2017 for PS4 and Xbox One and, again, looks incredibly cool. We’ll have to see whether the zoomed-out perspective is perhaps a little too zoomed-out but otherwise there looks to be very little wrong here with a very interesting title.
