Stardew Valley Made More Money Than Many of 2016’s AAA Titles

In the latest batch of information from Steam Spy it was revealed that Stardew Valley, 2016’s prime farming simulator, made more money than most AAA blockbusters. Selling nearly two million copies and making almost £20 million in revenue, the indie title is certainly a success story for its sole developer, Eric Barone.

According to Steam Spy’s data, which isn’t perfect, Stardew Valley was the 16th biggest money-maker of the year, ahead of Dishonored 2, Mafia 3 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Elsewhere, the most successful indie game on Steam belongs to No Man’s Sky which made around £35 million – this includes refunds.

The game that made the most money, rather surprisingly, was Civilization VI, making over £64 million. In fact, it was a great year overall for strategy titles with Civilization, XCOM 2 and Total War: Warhammer all included in the top 10.

It’s worth remembering however that, while Steam Spy is reliable, their numbers are calculated in a certain way. Sales outside of Steam’s main store are included, as well as giveaways, but DLC’s are not included in the total figure.

The full, and rather interesting, set of data is available here for your viewing pleasure.
