SEGA Mega Drive Classics Has 53 Games, But Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles Aren’t Two of Them

Sonic 3

Announced today, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is set to receive a bundle of classic Mega Drive (or Genesis if you’re in the US) games on 29th May, in the form of SEGA Mega Drive Classics.

I’ll be honest, I’m a little excited. The Mega Drive amazed me all those years ago, and I still fondly remember many of its titles to this day. Unfortunately, despite boasting over 50 games, there appears to be some omissions in SEGA Mega Drive Classics that I just can’t fathom.

Take a look at the list below. They are all the games that are set to feature in SEGA Mega Drive Classics. Notice what’s missing?

  • Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
  • Alien Soldier
  • Alien Storm
  • Altered Beast
  • Beyond Oasis
  • Bio-Hazard Battle
  • Bonanza Bros.
  • Columns
  • Columns III: Revenge of Columns
  • Comix Zone
  • Crack Down
  • Decap Attack
  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  • Dynamite Headdy
  • ESWAT: City Under Siege
  • Fatal Labyrinth
  • Flicky
  • Gain Ground
  • Galaxy Force II
  • Golden Axe
  • Golden Axe II
  • Golden Axe III
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Kid Chameleon
  • Landstalker
  • Light Crusader
  • Phantasy Star II
  • Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom
  • Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millenium
  • Ristar
  • Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi
  • Shining Force
  • Shining Force II
  • Shining in the Darkness
  • Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
  • Sonic 3D Blast
  • Sonic Spinball
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Space Harrier II
  • Streets of Rage
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • Streets of Rage 3
  • Super Thunder Blade
  • Sword of Vermilion
  • The Revenge of Shinobi
  • ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron
  • ToeJam& Earl
  • Vectorman
  • VectorMan 2
  • Virtua Fighter 2
  • Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair
  • Wonder Boy in Monster World

That’s right, there’s no Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles. To me, that’s blasphemy for a Mega Drive collection. Of course, there are other great Mega Drive titles missing too, such as Soleil, Earthworm Jim and Boogerman. But no Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles? That’s just… I can’t even find the words.

Thankfully all three of the Streets of Rage games have made the cut, and all three Golden Axe titles too. And then there’s Dynamite Headdy, Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja Master and Ristar, so it’s still worth buying. But I’ll reiterate, there’s no Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles. Has it sunken in yet? I don’t think I’ll ever get over it.

Anyway, SEGA Mega Drive Classics will be with us in a little over two months’ time. If you’ve got a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, it’ll probably be worth a purchase, despite the absence of a certain two titles.
