Yesterday at The Game Awards, it was announced that a winter map is coming to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
The announcement came in the form of a trailer featuring a cute CGI bird. I audibly went “aww!” as soon as I saw it. But I know video games. I’ve seen these dark tricks before.
A few seconds in, I turned to my partner and said, “something terrible is going to happen to the bird, isn’t it?”. He agreed.
God damn it. But it’s so cute! I expected a giant foot to come down and stomp it flat into the ground. Or a vehicle to come whizzing in from the side, squashing it into a bloody mess. Not quite. Instead, the wee birdie stumbles across a grenade. The pin’s still in. But it’s shiny, and the bird’s pretty attracted to it. Oh shit!
Explosion.
That poor bird. The camera pans out, revealing a nest in a tree with several eggs. Like I wasn’t sad enough already.
BUT. There it is – the bird flies back to its nest, safe and sound – the grenade pin still in its mouth. Hooray!
I’ve no real interest in playing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, but damn, they do know how to make a good trailer.
PUBG‘s winter map, Vikendi, will be available for all PC players on 19th December, and it’s coming to PS4 and Xbox One in January. If you can’t wait, it’s available right now on PC test servers. Just don’t go blowing up any birds.
