Over 15 million people have swabbed the decks and sailed the seven seas in Sea of Thieves since it launched just over two years ago.
In case you’re not sure, 15 million people is a lot of players. So that’s quite an achievement for Rare, the development studio behind Sea of Thieves.
And despite being over two years old, the multiplayer seafaring game doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. In fact, last month – June 2020 – was the biggest month so far for the game. 3.3 million players took to their pirate ships in that month alone.
Part of that success is down to the game’s launch on Steam. Since it released on the platform on 3rd June, more than one million copies have been sold. That’s on top of the playerbase on Xbox One and the Windows Store.
On the game’s continued success, Rare’s executive producer Joe Neate has said:
“It’s both thrilling and humbling to share with you that Sea of Thieves has been played by more than fifteen million players since our launch in March 2018.
The way that the game and its community has continued to grow has been amazing to see. It was only in January of this year when we shared that 10 million people had played the game!

On behalf of all of us at Rare, I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who’s ever played Sea of Thieves for helping to get us this far. It’s a game that we love making, and there’s plenty more to come. See you on the seas.”
Well done, Rare. May your reign of the seas long continue.
