Event organiser Reedpop has today announced that EGX, the UK’s biggest gaming event, is heading back to Birmingham.
But it’s not leaving London behind. Currently – well, if 2019 counts as ‘currently’; damn you, covid – there are two EGX events a year. The main EGX, held in October in London’s ExCeL exhibition centre, and EGX Rezzed in March, an indie-focused event held in London’s Tobacco Dock. From next year, there’ll be two main events: EGX London and EGX Birmingham.
The move is in response to disappointment of the main event moving from Birmingham’s NEC in 2018. And it makes sense: why have two events a year if they’re both held in the same city? Why not open up to a bigger portion of the country? Not everyone can easily access London, after all.
It does mean, however, that there will no longer be a dedicated EGX Rezzed event, which will undoubtedly be a disappointed to some. Both EGX London and EGX Birmingham will of course have an indie section however, and the Birmingham event in particular will “lean on expanding the Rezzed Zone”.
But both events will also have a AAA presence, along with all the events that EGX has become known for: EGX Theatre, Rezzed Sessions, GI Academy Zone, an esports arena, console corner and cosplay zone.
Tickets are not yet on sale, but EGX Birmingham will be held on 3rd-5th March 2022, and EGX London on 22nd-25th September 2022. You can read EGX’s official announcement by clicking here.
