Apex Legends is Getting a Surprise PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S Update

Apex Legends 1

Apex Legends’ Warriors Collection Event kicks off today, but that’s not the big news.

Apex Legends is a hugely popular online FPS and regularly introduces new characters, new events and so on, to keep the game fresh and the fans interested. What’s surprising is that this latest event will introduce a next-generation update.

The Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 update, which should be released later today, adds several next-gen features. Those features are:

  • 4K output (PS5 & Xbox Series X)
  • Full 60hz gameplay (PS5 & Xbox Series X|S)
  • HDR (PS5 & Xbox Series X|S)
  • Higher resolution shadow maps (PS5 & Xbox Series X)
  • Greater LOD distances (PS5 & Xbox Series X)

However, there are a few other feature which are noticable by their absence. There’s no sign of a 120hz mode or support for the PlayStation 5’s haptic triggers. Developer Respawn has promised that these additional improvements will be coming at a later date, but hasn’t stated exactly when.

If you’ve got an Xbox Series X or S, Smart Delivery means the game should auto-upgrade when the patch is out. If you’ve got a PlayStation 5, you’ll need to manually switch to the PlayStation 5 version, as detailed here.

If you’ve not already tackled Apex Legends it’s free to play and doesn’t require an Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus subscription. You can find out more about the update, as well as the Warriors Collection Event (which sees the return of the 9v9 mode Control mode)   here.

Chris has been gaming since the days of the Acorn Electron, which was allegedly purchased to 'help him with his homework'. You can probably guess how well that went. He’ll tackle most genres – football titles aside – though he has a taste for games that that are post-apocalyptic, horror-oriented or thought provoking in nature.
