Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker’s Latest Update Makes it Play Better Solo

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker’s latest update, patch 6.1, adds a new chapter to the game, but that’s not what’s really important.

Sure, if you’re a long-time Final Fantasy XIV player and you’ve exhausted most of the game’s quests and storyline, you’ll be grateful that there’s now more to do. The story picks up after the end of the Endwalker expansion, though don’t count on it being quite as dramatic.

What matters more is that this MMORPG has new features that make solo play easier to pull off. Previously, there were dungeons that you couldn’t typically handle so you’d have to enlist other people to help you out. However, that’s no longer the case thanks to this new update. And, aside from being convenient if your team-mates aren’t available, it’s another hook for developer Square Enix to get people into the game.

How does it work? It essentially gives you AI-controlled teammates who will kick bottom at the same time you do. It’s dubbed the Duty Support System, and we got wind of it back in February, but as of now it’s part of the game. The system only, currently, covers the main A Realm Reborn quest-line and dungeons, but we’d anticipate it being rolled out to cover all expansions.

There are a wealth of other changes as well, all of which you can find here. Final Fantasy XIV has existed, in some form or other, since 2010 and, at the time of writing, has over 40,000 concurrent players. Quite where Square Enix goes from here remains to be seen but we doubt they’ll let Final Fantasy XIV die any time soon.
