Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Has a New Update. Here Are the Patch Notes

Tears of the Kingdom Horse

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has a new patch, fixing a bug that, as revealed by the patch notes, could strand you on Great Sky Island.

Great Sky Island is Tears of the Kingdom’s tutorial area. Yes, it’s pretty huge but it’s still there to teach you the ropes. You can’t descend to Hyrule until you have completed the Island’s main quest. We didn’t encounter the bug but evidently some people did. As detailed in the Tears of the Kingdom patch notes, it meant that you couldn’t continue the main quest line.

And that, in turn, meant you couldn’t leave Great Sky Island. Hang on… couldn’t you just jump down to Hyrule? You can, later in the game. But until you’ve finished the Great Sky Island quest line, jumping off counts as falling to your doom. You’re stranded on Great Sky Island.. forever.

The good news is that this patch not only fixes the bug going forward, it fixes the issue for anyone who’s already encountered it. One of the horrors of show-stopping bugs like this is that it sometimes means you have to reload. And if you’ve not got an earlier save, you could have to start all over again.

So what else does this patch do? Labelled patch 1.1.1 it fixes various other unspecified issues. The Tears of the Kingdom patch notes are a bit brief and are as follows:

  • Fixed issue where, sometimes, the player could not clear main quest “The Closed Door”, even if they fulfilled the conditions to advance the quest.
    • If you have already encountered this issue, you will be able to clear the quest by downloading this update data.
  • Several issues have been addressed to improve the gameplay experience.

You should be prompted to download the the patch the next time you start up the game. Compared to some titles we’ve had a bug-free experience playing Tears of the Kingdom. Though if you’re having difficulty with other aspects of the game you can check out our guides here.
