Aww.. isn’t Nintendo Australia’s new The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom trailer heartwarming?
The correct answer is, in fact, no. This Nintendo Australia trailer does seem like it’s supposed to warm the cockles of your heart. It’s meant to make you nostalgic for days gone, suggesting that playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a way to revisit those days. And, to be fair, this action-RPG’s ridiculous crafting system has definitely got your attention.
But, watching it, it comes across as weirdly, unsettlingly bleak. It paints a picture of a man who’s crushed by everyday life. His existence (and the commercial) is so devoid of colour the only light is playing Tears of the Kingdom. That’s pretty much the only time he smiles during the whole commercial.
Is this a commentary on the drudgery of office life? Or is just an effort to make Tears of the Kingdom look like your only brief escape from misery? Either way, it’s unsettling to watch. It definitely left us a little more miserable than we were before. Maybe that’s just because we’re so very, very old.
If you’re prepared to delve into this commercial’s bleak world, you can check out the Tears of the Kingdom trailer above. As for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it arrives on Nintendo Switch this Friday May 12th.
