Tips for Playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Are you just about to dive into The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom? Let us help you with a few beginner’s tips.

Chances are, if you’re playing Tears of the Kingdom, you’ve already played its predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. If so, much of the game will feel familiar. It’s the same Link, in the same world. Except he’s got a handful of new skills at his disposal: fusing and crafting items. It opens up a whole new suit of possibilities – and as fun as they are, they can take some getting used to. And so, whether you’re new to Zelda or a series stalwart, hopefully our Tears of the Kingdom tips can point you in the right direction.

Pick up… everything

Whether it’s a weapon or an apple, pick up just about everything you find. Ingredients will always come in handy for cooking and making healing items, and the bigger the stash you obtain, the better.

As your weapons in Tears of the Kingdom break very easily, it’s always best to have plenty at your disposal. You can only hold so many, so if you find something new, then consider swapping out something in your inventory if it’s better. Sticks are great to begin with, but once you start finding swords and axes, it’s safe to drop them.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom‘s crafting mechanics can be a little difficult to get used t. Its controls are fiddly, and it’ll take you a while to nail rotating items to get them exactly where you want them to be. But persevere and play around, and you’ll find a world of possibilities open up. In the beginning, simply attaching a couple of logs together to make a bridge is a thrill. But eventually, you’ll be able to make huge mechanical constructs limited only by your imagination (and slightly by the resources available to you in-game).

Lock on to enemies

There’s plenty of combat to engage with in Tears of the Kingdom. Enemies don’t hold back, and so make sure you’re ready before going in to a fight. Hold down ZL to lock on – and put up your shield – when in combat. Doing this gives you a better view of your opponent and allows you to more effectively watch out for their attacks.

Get cooking

Get cooking and making tasty meals as soon as possible. Apples are all well and good for healing you a tiny amount, but as you gain more health, you’ll want to heal more hearts at a time. The best way to do that is by cooking up various dishes over a campfire. Have fun with it and experiment with different ingredients. It might not always go right, but experimentation is key!

Chop down trees

If you need more wood for your constructs, chop down trees. As long as you’ve got an axe in your inventory, you can attack any tree in the world, and it’ll give you a log which you can pick up with Ultrahand and use to make, well, just about anything you want.

The world of Tears of the Kingdom is huge, and so one of the best tips we can give you is to simply explore. There’s no right or wrong way to play, and you’ll have the most fun by simply taking control of your own adventure, going where you want, when you want. Sure, the game will occasionally guide you towards an objective, but how you get there – and what you do on the way – is down to you. So get off the beaten path, go the wrong way, play around and see what you can find. You’ll have a much better time for it.
