GOG resurrects the original Resident Evil trilogy, Jill Sandwich and all

Missing the original Resident Evil trilogy? Frustrated that the only way to legally get your hands on 2 and 3 is to pay through the nose on eBay? All is changing, thanks to GOG, which has teamed up with Capcom to re-release the original Resident Evil 1 – 3 games.

These are Resident Evil’s PC incarnations, which means they’re as pretty as the the original survival horror trilogy can get. Short of putting them through max settings in a PlayStation emulator, that is.

And, while we’ve yet to try them ourselves, they should be uncensored. We still remember getting a review copy of Resident Evil, gloriously uncut, and then discovering the store version was butchered, with a black and white intro and other edits.

But, best of all, these GOG releases are loaded with all the original Resident Evil shlock, Resident Evil 1 especially. If you’ve only ever played the remake, you’re in for a treat. You’ll get to experience lines like “Hope this is not Chris’s blood”, and “You were almost a Jill Sandwich!”

GOG has also given the games a tweak, adding in new rendering options, full Windows 10/11 compatibility, video player improvements and more. In other words, you shouldn’t have to wrestle with the game as we did when we tried playing the original Resi 3 on PC.

The bad news is that you’ll have to wait for Resident Evil 2 and 3. While all three can be bought as a bundle, only Resident Evil is available to play now. The others are ‘coming soon’ in 2024, and you can save a few pounds/dollars if you buy a bundle of all three.

Here’s what’s available right now:

So, head to GOG and experience the original and rather ridiculous Resident Evil.
