My Nintendo Gold Points are being discontinued in March

We love reward programs here at GameSpew, and one of the best around is Nintendo’s Gold Points scheme. Not only do players get points for digital purchases thanks to My Nintendo Gold Points, but they get them for physical purchases, too. But that’s all going to come to an end soon, with Nintendo announcing that My Nintendo Gold Points will be discontinued on 25th March.

Currently, buying games digitally on the Nintendo eShop basically gives players 5% back via Gold Points. So, a £49.99 purchase equates to 250 points, with each point being worth 1p. When it comes to physical games, players can earn points worth 1% of the eShop price. It’s only a small amount but these points add up, and then they can be used on the eShop to either buy additional games outright or at least provide a discount.

A post on My Nintendo explains that from 25th March, Gold Points will no longer be earned on digital purchases. Additionally, players will also be unable to earn Gold Points via games released physically from 25th March onwards. For physical games released before that date, things get a little more complicated – you’ll still be able to earn Gold Points until a year after the game’s release date. If you have lots of physical games that you haven’t claimed the points for, then, you might want to do so before 25th March.

The good news is that any Gold Points you have on your account can be spent after 25th March if you wish. They have to be used within 12 months of adding them to your account, however, otherwise they’ll be lost. Check out the My Nintendo website for more information.

The question now is whether Nintendo will start a new rewards system to take its place. My Nintendo Gold Points has been great over the years, allowing us to buy many games on sale that we otherwise wouldn’t have given a try. And so, it’s a real shame that it’s coming to an end. It will be even worse if there’s nothing to take its place in the future.
