Looking forward to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4? You’ll be even more hyped after watching developer Infinity Ward’s latest behind-the-scenes video, which promises to deliver “big war”.

That’s not a cue for a giant mech game, though this military FPS series has already gone there. Instead, according to studio gameplay director Zied Rieke, MW4 will emulate the sensation of large-scale combat. “This feels like making a World War 2 game sometimes,” they explain, with “…huge forces in direct conflict.”

“This is our opportunity for big war,” adds associate design director Alex Norris, “To bring it back and do it the Modern Warfare way. And to us that means a large scale battle, reclaiming a city.” Despite sharing a name with 2007’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the game’s locale is very different, sending you to the fictional Korean city of Hajing in the middle of a war between North Korea and South Korea.

The video, which you can watch above, also explores how Infinity Ward is employing a dialect coach to make sure that the North and South Korean characters sound authentic. Given how isolated North Korea is, putting in a call for North Korean actors wasn’t really an option.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s setting has led to a few raised eyebrows, though it’s not just throwing you into the mix as one of the franchise’s western characters. Instead, you’ll get to play as several protagonists, including a South Korean soldier by the name of Park.

Given how poorly received Modern Warfare 3’s campaign was, we have our fingers crossed that Infinity Ward is putting the work in to make MW 4’s single-player mode stand out. You can find out for sure when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches this 23rd October on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
