Call of Duty’s director reveals the upcoming movie will take place in the Modern Warfare universe

Given how popular, and profitable, Call of Duty is, it was only a matter of time before someone at Activision floated the idea of it becoming a movie. Now, it’s actually happening and Peter Berg, who’s directing the film, has confirmed it’ll be set in the Modern Warfare universe.
Berg’s statement, given at Fanatics Fest, suggests it’ll lean into the rebooted Modern Warfare trilogy, which already boasts several stand-out characters. There’s SAS officer Price, Ghost, never seen out of his mask, and Soap, who you spend much – but not all – of the last couple of games playing as.
The snag is that if the Call of Duty movie is to succeed, it’ll have to appeal to both long-time players and movie-goers who’ve never touched the games. But it shouldn’t take long for the latter to get to grips with Price and team. And Berg has previously directed thriller The Kingdom and Battleship, so he’s no stranger to military movies.
Our one reservation, however, is that if it’s set in the Modern Warfare universe, rather than a parallel universe, none of the games’ protagonists are going to meet a messy end. Without giving too much away, both the rebooted trilogy and the original trilogy had some bombshell deaths.
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare movie is set for a June 30th, 2028 release. The next game in the series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, is released this October 23, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
