After Legacy of Atlantis’s delay, Tomb Raider: Catalyst has been bumped to 2028

Amazon Games Studios has confirmed that, following on from the delay of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Tomb Raider: Catalyst’s release has been pushed to 2028. That means it could be two full years before fans get a new Lara Croft story (Legacy of Atlantis being a reboot).

The news was revealed in a surprisingly low-key fashion, on The Game Business podcast. Amazon’s head of gaming, Jeffrey Gattis, said that “Atlantis comes February 12th of next year, and then we’ll follow on with the next one, so we’re excited about those.”

Why the delay? Gattis didn’t clarify and it is possible that Tomb Raider: Catalyst needs more time in the oven. Certainly, developer Crystal Dynamics can now lavish a little more love and care on Catalyst. But even if the game was ready to go in 2027, Amazon likely wouldn’t want to release two major Tomb Raider titles in the same year.

While the ‘survivor’ Tomb Raider trilogy was originally thought of as a reboot, Tomb Raider: Catalyst doesn’t ignore the original entries. Set in Northern India, in a region that’s been subject to a mystical cataclysm, it sees Lara racing to “uncover the truth buried beneath the fractured landscape and stop those who would use its power for their own gain.”

Ethically suspect as it may be, we’re seriously stoked for more Tomb Raider. We’re also hoping we’ll have the chance to catch up on Tomb Raider: Underworld’s Lara doppelganger, who’s been doing her own thing since 2008.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis arrives on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S February 12th, 2027. In the meantime, Tomb Raider: Underworld is heavily discounted on Xbox.
