Kingdom Hearts 4 gets a new Coco world trailer, a release window and a Disney+ animated series
Looking forward to Kingdom Hearts 4? You’re not the only one – fans have been eagerly anticipating the latest entry in this fantasy RPG series since it was announced back in 2022. Now, four years later, at Disney’s D23 event, developer Square Enix has finally given Kingdom Hearts 4 a release window.
If you’re unfamiliar with D23, Disney describes it as the ‘Ultimate Fan Event’ and the company uses it to reveal its new movies, shows, toys, and so on. Given that the company owns Marvel, Star Wars, Fox, Pixar and more, there’s a lot on display. Kingdom Hearts has yet to cross over with Marvel or Star Wars, but it features characters and lands from various other Disney and Square Enix properties.
Disney and Square Enix dropped a Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer, which offers a glimpse at a new Kingdom Hearts land, themed around the movie Coco. It appears that a gang of nasties is set on ruining the Day of the Dead, and Miguel’s guitar performance, but then Sora and pals turn up to kick shadow creature bottom. The trailer, which you can watch below, ends with confirmation that Kingdom Hearts 4 is coming in late 2027.
Disney has also announced an animated Kingdom Hearts Disney+ series is on the way, stating that “..with a creative team that is working closely with the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, our new series will be unmistakably Kingdom Hearts”. Nomura has worked on virtually all of the Kingdom Hearts games, typically as director and designer.
What Disney hasn’t stated is how the series will fit into Kingdom Hearts’ storyline, if at all, or if it’ll instead adapt the games from scratch. The latter could be a mammoth task since there are actually around 13 canon Kingdom Hearts games out there, each expanding the series’ lore.
It’s exciting news for Kingdom Hearts fans, certainly, and I’ve got my fingers crossed that the final game delivers the Back to the Future gag the trailer seems to set up. Kingdom Hearts 4 is set to arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. And if you need to catch up, the Kingdom Hearts series (split into several bundles) is currently 70% off on Steam.
