Twin-Stick Shooter THOTH is a Cruel Mistress That You’ll Keep Going Back To

Some twin-stick shooters have too much or too little, but THOTH is just right.

Although twin-stick shooter THOTH is difficult, I never found myself wanting to give up on it. Developed by Jeppe Carlsen and recently released on Switch, THOTH is a game worth sticking with because the further you progress, the more challenging it becomes.

And the more challenging it is, the more satisfying it feels when you finally progress past the level that’s been torturing you for what feels like hours.

In the game you play as a small white circle that can move fluidly around a square map. Your little circle shoots out quick bullets in order to take out the geometric “enemies” coming towards you. The catch is that those enemies speed up when you “kill” them, making the map even more challenging and dangerous to navigate.

Of course, as you progress the levels will get harder and harder and you’ll find yourself running out of space to move around it. It can certainly get frustrating at times, but THOTH has a way of pulling you back in just when you think you’re ready to put it back down.

What’s particularly interesting about THOTH is that you can bring a friend along for the ride. Two heads have got to be better than one, right? Well, not necessarily. You see, THOTH is a twin-stick shooter meaning that you need both sticks to play, but when you try to play two-player, each using one of the Switch’s Joy-Cons, you’re suddenly playing with a single stick. Unless you’ve got separate controllers, it’s impossible to bring your friend along to try and conquer THOTH together. With that being said if you do have two controllers, it’s well worth giving multiplayer a shot.

Available now on Switch for only $4.99, THOTH is well worth picking up if you’re looking for something to entertain you for an hour or two. Casual gamers might find its difficulty to be a little off-putting, but those that stick with it won’t be disappointed.
