Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter is finally happening, but it’s in Fortnite

Over thirty years after their first appearances, the fighters from Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter will get to face off against each other. Finally, a conclusive answer to all those “Who would win – Ryu or Sub-Zero” schoolyard arguments! There’s a catch, though – these Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter brawls will be happening in Fortnite again, and again, and again.

Epic has confirmed that, several years after adding Street Fighter 2’s Ryu, Chun-Li and company to the massively popular (and profitable) online shooter, Mortal Kombat’s Sub-Zero is joining the roster as a purchasable skin. And, according to leaker, FNBRIntel, Scorpion will be added a little later down the line

Neither Capcom or NetherRealm Studios are strangers to crossovers. Street Fighter 2 has previously collided with the Marvel Comics, Tekken and King of Fighters worlds. Mortal Kombat, meanwhile, has crossed over with the DC Universe, as well as hosting a diverse range of guest fighters. However, these iconic brawlers have never shared a space until now.

Sure, there have been fan animations, and Mugen has (unofficially) brought them together. But an official team-up, which would have been a sure moneyspinner, never happened. According to Street Fighter 5 producer Yoshinori Ono, it was a Capcom decision. Speaking to Eurogamer, Ono explained: “A proposal for a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat was rejected by Capcom. But it wasn’t me personally! There were many people at the company that felt that it wasn’t a good fit for our characters.”

It’s true that the games, despite their love of ridiculous special moves, are different in tone. Mortal Kombat’s gruesome Fatalities and gore-heavy gameplay wouldn’t easily gel with Street Fighter’s lighter world. The most we got when Guile’s pal Charlie ‘died’ was a splatter of blood and a flash of him falling off a cliff. Mortal Kombat would have followed him all the way down.

So, the closest we’re likely to get to an official Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter is Fortnite players brawling and blasting while dressed as Sub-Zero and Ryu. But if you’ve been craving this crossover, it’s exciting news. You won’t have to wait long either. Acording to Epic, Sub-Zero drops with this February 21st’s new season. There’s no news on severed head back-bling, but we’ve got our fingers crossed.
