Ghost Recon is getting a sequel but I’m praying to Tom Clancy that it’s not open world

Ghost Recon

After six long years away, Ubisoft has confirmed, via a shareholder meeting, that we’re getting a new sequel in the Ghost Recon series. They’ve whipped out the Ouija board to commune with the spirit of their favourite deceased author and a sixteenth Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon game in the works.

But, while I did get some enjoyment out of the franchise’s open-world entries, Ghost Recon deserves better than to be a generic Ubisoft game, complete with collectables and radio tower analogues. The success of Ready or Not and Ubisoft’s own Rainbow Six Siege proves there’s mileage in smaller maps.

That’s not suggesting Ubisoft should turn its Ghost Recon sequel into a corridor shooter, far from it. But my fondest memories of Ghost Recon are from the earlier games, sneaking and shooting my way around a semi-open zone. While the levels were big enough to let me adopt my own tactics, I was acutely aware that I couldn’t just run like hell until the enemy was far behind me. That, in turn, did wonders for those titles’ tension factor.

The good news is that old-school Ghost Recon fans like me may actually get what we want. Codenamed ‘Project Over’, it was reported back in March that it has more in common with squad-based military simulator games. However, that remains a hopeful rumour.

Ubisoft has yet to announce Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 16: A Tom Clancy Game to the gaming public. We’d expect an announcement to drop later this year, followed by a late 2025 or an early 2026 release. In the meantime, if you’re after an old-school Ghost Recon experience, the 2001 original is available via GOG.
