Will We See Marvel vs. Capcom 4 in 2017?

Earlier today, Polygon put together a report from multiple sources saying that Marvel vs. Capcom 4 is in development, scheduled for a release in 2017 and is being revealed later this very week. Interesting stuff.

The reports have been corroborated by others in media, including Eurogamer. Marvel vs. Capcom 4 is set to be officially revealed at Playstation Experience this week – where the Capcom Street Fighter 5 tournament is also being held. The last game in the series, Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, was released back in 2011 and, since then, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded to much, much greater heights – meaning something slightly disconcerting for the 2017 release.

Due to the massive scale of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and some licensing issues – the next title will heavily feature characters from the MCU but not from X-Men. Possibly no X-Men characters at all.

It’s also possible – although, as always, this is speculation – that as Marvel vs. Capcom 4 is being revealed at Playstation Experience and along with Capcom’s close ties to Sony as of late (Street Fighter 5 was console-exclusive to the PS4) that the next title may be Playstation-exclusive. Or of course, it may not. We’ll just have to wait and see on 3–4 December.
