PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Will Run at 30FPS on All Xbox One Consoles

The astronomically popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds launches later this month on Xbox One, and ahead of its release a trickle of information is starting to filter through.

Initially it seemed like Xbox One X owners were going to get a silky smooth 60fps experience, with Brendan Greene being quoted as saying “Definitely on Xbox One X, 60FPS” in GamesTM issue 194. Now, however, the creator of the game has gone back on that statement and clarified that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will in fact run at 30fps on all Xbox One devices.

The news came in a tweet posted today, though Brendan also emphasised that the game is constantly being refined, and that options are being explored to increase the framerate.

Chances are the decision to limit the framerate has been made to ensure parity across the Xbox One platforms – those playing at 60fps on Xbox One X would have an advantage over those playing on a standard Xbox One otherwise. If the standard Xbox One version of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds can be optimised and configured to run at 60fps then surely the limit will be raised.

It will no doubt come as a disappointment to Xbox  One X owners though, especially with the knowledge that their consoles are more than capable of running the game at double the framerate. Maybe a better option would have been to let players decide for themselves, i.e. have a tickbox that enables you to be matched with players using an Xbox One X console?

In any case, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is likely to sell like hotcakes – it just won’t be as hot as it could have been on Xbox One X. Especially considering that 4K textures won’t be coming to the PC or Xbox One X versions any time soon either.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will be released on Microsoft’s Game Preview Program for Xbox One on 12th December.
