Hearthstone Tavern Brawl: 4-9 May

“Spiders have overrun everything, including your deck! Whatever class you play, your deck will be TEEMING with webspinners” It’s the Tavern Brawl for 4 to 9 May: Spiders, Spiders EVERYWHERE!

Hearthstone’s Tavern Brawl is a weekly event where the development team behind the game create a fun and sometimes crazy set of rules for a match. Tavern Brawl is great for new players especially during a week when the decks are not built by the player themselves. In normal play, new players tend to be demolished by “net-decking” (where a player finds a highly rated deck online and copies it), or players having objectively better cards than the newer players, and Hearthstone’s arena mode can be just as daunting for new players. Newer players can always look for decks online based on only the starting cards for a good way to begin, and as you play, you’ll start noticing what works and what doesn’t.

Spiders, Spiders EVERYWHERE! makes its third appearance in Hearthstone’s Tavern Brawl; a brawl where your deck is mostly filled with Webspinners ensuring a heavily luck-based Tavern Brawl. Still nothing that really shows off the power of Whispers of the Old Gods, but this one can be fun in its own right. Obviously, the class with the best synergy for the Webspinners is Hunter, but that’s really only if you get luck of the draw out of those Webspinners. It is a pre-built deck this week so there’s no need to worry about your deck building skills. As a luck-based Tavern Brawl it’s self-explanatory that I didn’t do very well.

I thought why not go Hunter; it could be a laugh with some of the synergy I could get. When will I ever learn? It didn’t work out and I lost to a Mage. Obviously my hope was to get some Hunter spells that would have paired well with all the beasts that I would be putting down, alas that wasn’t to be. As usual, my opponent ended up getting exactly what they needed to kill anything I put on the board. However, it was mainly Gahz’rilla that lost me the match; I couldn’t do anything about it, and as a Mage they were able to use their Hero Power to ping Gahz’rilla for essentially free double damage.

Anything I could have used to kill Gahz’rilla would have just died as soon as I put it out so there really wasn’t anything I could do to stop it, so it hit me one for 24 damage. I didn’t get too many good cards out of my Webspinners, certainly not ones anywhere near the power of Gahz’rilla. A Pit Snake may have saved me as I had one in my hand at the time, but the Mage probably would have just used their hero power on it rendering it useless. When the Gahz’rilla finally died the Mages Effigy just happened to turn it into Malorne. It was at that point I conceded as I didn’t really have any chance of winning now only being down to three HP.

It’s nice to once again have a Tavern Brawl without the need to build a deck. With Whispers of the Old Gods, a constructed Tavern Brawl is now even more worrisome for new players. Spiders, Spiders EVERYWHERE! can be a fun Tavern Brawl, but only if you’re lucky enough to pull some of the legendary beasts out of the Webspinners. Hopefully, we get a new Tavern Brawl next week with hilarious Whispers of the Old Gods outcomes, and I’m going to keep saying that until we do.
