The Walking Dead: Season 3 will begin December 20

The third season of Telltale’s The Walking Dead was set to release sometime in November. However, in true Telltale fashion, The Walking Dead: A New Frontier will now be releasing December 20. An official trailer for the series will debut at The Game Awards on December 1.

That’s right, this new season isn’t actually entitled “Season 3” but rather under a subtitle: “A New Frontier”. It may just be a small marketing trick or it might also signify that A New Frontier is aiming to be a soft reboot of sorts. Season 2 of The Walking Dead took place only a few months after the events of the first season, whereas A New Frontier takes place a couple of years after season 2.

While Clementine is still Season 3’s focus, she is much older and more different from the Clem we are all used to. The large time-skip also serves as a useful explanation as to what happened during the vastly different endings of the second season.

It could be the delayed release of The Walking Dead is to allow time for Batman to wrap up its story. The fourth episode, Guardian of Gotham, released yesterday – here’s our review – which leaves only one more to go. This timeline of beginning a new series just as another ends would line up with Telltale’s next game, Guardians of the Galaxy, which, while there is no official release date, will presumably begin around the release of the movie in April – just enough time for The Walking Dead: A New Frontier to finish.
