Bungie Addresses Destiny 2 Question With the Answer No One Wanted

Bungie laid out an update yesterday on the future of Destiny and the road ahead to Destiny 2. There’s one question that Bungie has been plagued with for years now when news of a sequel first emerged. They answered it today. And, well, it’s not the best answer.

Bungie usually gives a Thursday update through the Destiny forums and smartphone app. However, on Thursday they posted an announcement would be coming a day later, on Friday, which would answer some questions for what’s ahead. First off, they released the name for the final live event for Destiny – “Age of Triumph”. It will be a “fun and memorable celebration”, which is vague and optimistic. It will be fully revealed on Wednesday 8th March.

Bungie also stated in the update that “Age of Triumph” will be coming at the end of March. Then, they spoke on the question all us Guardians have been asking: the question about character carry-over. The answer will certainly leave a sour taste in the collective mouths of Day 1 players.

The update says: “Destiny 1 power, possessions, and Eververse-related items and currency will not carry forward.” That means, I assume, armour, weapons, and light level will be removed and/or reset. Also, why the hell are Eververse items and currency not carrying over? I paid real money for that stuff. You can’t just put all those emotes back in the game? Seems silly and feels like an unnecessary slap in the face on top of everything else.

What will carry over, however, is your character custimisation. Race, gender, hair, marks, etc. You know, the meaningless stuff that you forgot existed after you could put your helmet on in The Tower.

It is, for me, a heart-breaking, probably deal-breaking move by Bungie. My interest in Destiny 2 was almost entirely built upon character possessions being carried over. I understand the idea: start over, make it feel fresh and new, give us new armour and weapons. But for those like me who poured three years into this adventure, we don’t want to start over; we want to continue. We’ll see how the community responds, but I imagine a rift (haha, get it?!) will appear.
