7 Games to Play After Watching Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Splinter Cell Conviction 2

Your mission, should you choose to accept it…

top 10 sad games

Seen Mission: Impossible – Fallout yet? It’s bloody good.

If you’re a gamer, chances are you’ll walk out of the cinema wondering why there hasn’t been a Mission: Impossible game for years; their set pieces are perfect video game fodder. There are, however, a number of games that at least offer a taste of what makes the Mission: Impossible films so good.

All of the following games are available to play on at least one current gen console, except for one which is PC only but just had to be included. So, if you want to experience what it would be like to be Ethan Hunt for about 10 hours, these are the games you should consider playing.

Shadow Complex Remastered

Shadow Complex

Available on: PS4, Xbox One & PC

Set in an underground base, Shadow Complex Remastered is a metroidvania that captures the very essence of Mission: Impossible. Need it spelling out? It has both espionage and action.

Stumbling upon a rogue paramilitary group calling themselves The Restoration, it’s up to you to put a stop to their plans. And to prevent them from putting in motion the events that will lead to an American civil war, you’re going to use their own high-tech creations against them.

With its thrilling political plot that includes a government conspiracy – because why not? – Shadow Complex Remastered is a game that no fan of Ethan Hunt should overlook.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Top 10 anticipated games of 2015

Available on: PS4, Xbox One & PC

Okay, so Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain may not be the Metal Gear game that most closely resembles Mission: Impossible – that would probably be Metal Gear Solid 4 – but we have to work with what we’ve got.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is certainly high on espionage, and while its supernatural enemies give the action a more fantastical element, it’s action nonetheless. Let loose in an open world, you’ll take on a myriad of missions. And while they very rarely seem like they’re impossible, Mission: Impossible fans will probably be in their element with them.

If sneaking into bases is your thing, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is for you. But it’s also for you if you like blowing things up, or putting meticulous plans into action. It has got a bit of something for everybody.

Hitman

Available on: PS4, Xbox One & PC

While Ethan Hunt isn’t out to assassinate his adversaries in the Mission: Impossible films, there are some parallels to be drawn with IO Interactive’s Hitman games.

In Hitman, it’s all about moving around environments undetected, finding your mark, observing them, and than executing a plan. Quite often you’ll do that by donning a new outfit, which seems dull compared to wearing a convincing mask, but it’ll do. You might also need to scale buildings from time to time.

While Hitman: Absolution, available on PC and Xbox One via backwards compatibility, probably offers more of a Mission:Impossible experience, Hitman is undoubtedly the better game. Just pretend you’re one of the assassins that Ethan Hunt has to frequently thwart.

Splinter Cell Conviction

Splinter Cell Conviction

Available on: Xbox One (via backwards compatibility) & PC

As if finding out your previous employer had something to do with your daughter’s death isn’t bad enough, in Splinter Cell Conviction, Sam Fisher also has to deal with a terrorist plot that threatens millions of lives. A bummer, huh?

While Sam Fisher is a rogue agent in Splinter Cell Conviction, however, he still has a wealth of high-tech weapons and gadgets available to him. It wouldn’t be much fun to play otherwise, would it?

Cram-packed full of stealth and action, Splinter Cell Conviction is definitely a good game for fans of Mission: Impossible. It’s nicely presented too. We’re just hoping that a new Splinter Cell game gets announced in the near future.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Available on: PS4

You’re probably thinking what the hell is an Uncharted game doing on this list, but there’s a good reason. You could replace the characters of almost any of Mission: Impossible – Fallout‘s big action pieces with Uncharted characters and it would seem right.

While Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has little to no espionage to speak of, its action is pure Mission: Impossible. Death defying jumps, car chases, brawls, shootouts; they’re all in there. In fact, if anyone was to make a new Mission: Impossible game, it would be criminal if it wasn’t Naughty Dog.

If you want to play the type of high action set-pieces that Mission: Impossible is known for and aren’t too bothered about the espionage, give Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End a go. You won’t be disappointed.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Deus Ex Mankind Divided

Available on: PS4, Xbox One & PC

Infiltration, punching bad guys, hacking; you’ll find all these things in multiple Mission: Impossible films, and you’ll also find them in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is like a Mission: Impossible film set in the future, and also with the high-octane chases removed. When you’re not infiltrating highly secured areas by crawling through vents, you’ll be hacking computer systems and assaulting bad guys in whichever way you see fit. And yeah, it’s as fun as it sounds. If not more.

While Deus Ex: Mankind Divided didn’t perhaps make as much of an impact on gamers as Human Revolution did, it’s still a great game. And after watching Mission: Impossible – Fallout, you might find its combination of espionage and action more appealing than ever.

Alpha Protocol

Alpha Protocol

Available on: PC

Alpha Protocol is essentially Mission: Impossible – The Game.

Released for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in 2010, it unfortunately had a lot of issues upon launch. As such, its reviews weren’t glowing. Over time, however, many of its problems were ironed out, and now it has quite a cult following.

Alpha Protocol‘s subtitle, The Espionage RPG, should tell you everything you need to know about the game. Playing as a member of a Black Ops agency, the proverbial shit hits the fan and you’re left with your world turned upside down. Presumed dead, it’s up to you to discover the truth and put things right. And how you do that is up to you.

Allowing you to choose a character class to suit your playing style, Alpha Protocol lets you do things your way. Even how you choose to interact with other characters has an effect on your development. Suffice to say, if you don’t mind that it now looks a little dated, Mission: Impossible fans would be wise to check Alpha Protocol out. Hopefully it will become playable on Xbox One via backwards compatibility at some point.
