The Seven Coolest Rare World of Warcraft Mounts and Where to Find Them

The Best Rare World of Warcraft Mounts
We’re in those latter stages of a World of Warcraft expansion where mount farming is one of the better ways to spend your time.
If you consider yourself unlucky, like me, then it’s probably best not to bother with trying to obtain some of these mounts. Only one in this list is guaranteed, but takes a lot of work; the others are only obtainable through by sheer luck. Don’t forget that our definition of the coolest rare mounts is subjective and you may hate all seven of these mounts – that would be a feat though, so well done for that.
We made sure not to include mounts that are no longer obtainable. These seven World of Warcraft mounts also aren’t in any particular order, so let’s not waste any more time and crack on.
Solar Spirehawk

Of Draenor’s world bosses, only one drops a mount, Rukhmar. The mount she drops is the fiery Solar Spirehawk. The Spirehawk is one of WoW’s standard 0.1% drop chance mounts. Thankfully, farming her can be done solo by a level 110 easily, but she can only be looted once a week per character, and with that soul-crushingly low drop chance it could mean over a thousands of attempts before you get the Solar Spirehawk mount.
Rukhmar can be found in the Spires of Arak flying around the south westerly shores. If she’s not there, don’t panic; she only has a 10-15 minute time between respawns. For a more exact location for her, the coordinates for her spawn point are 37,38.5. You’ll have to find somewhere to aggro her from though as she flies up high – there’s a bridge nearby that is a favoured spot to fight her.
Prestigious Midnight Courser

This is one World of Warcraft mount you can work towards, but one I reckon I’ll never get. That boils down to the fact I hate PvP, and yes, it’s because I’m bad at it. The now familiar prestige mechanic was something brought into Legion as part of the revamped PvP. In this expansion, you level up honor until 50 and then prestige it back to one. To receive the mount, Prestigious Midnight Courser, you have to prestige 25 times. It’s a pretty morbid-looking mount thanks to a bowl of skulls on its side and streaking red effects that contrast the black armour. A perfect horse for a number of Death Knight and Warrior transmogs.
In an interview with Forbes, World of Warcraft’s game director Ion Hazzikostas said that Blizzard isn’t looking to get rid of these rewards, so it can be something you work towards past the end of Legion – especially if you don’t really PvP.
Astral Cloud Serpent

Pandaria had some nice looking mounts, and I’d say none more so than Elegon’s Astral Cloud Serpent. This is a heavily sought-after mount from Mogu’shan Vaults. There are many cloud serpents in Pandaria, but Elegon and the mount are a translucent version with a skeleton connected by stars.
Luckily, this can be looted from all bar LFR difficulty of Mogu’shan Vaults. I would always farm it on 25-man heroic for a better chance at receiving it, and Elegon is easily soloable on any difficulty at 110. Don’t bother with your Elder Charm bonus roll as it will never grant the mount, and it can only be granted through the cache that appears once you kill Elegon. It’s a shame this beautiful World of Warcraft mount is found in a not-too-fondly remembered raid – though it’s very pretty. This mount first appeared about six years ago, and some people have farmed for it ever since.
Pureblood Fire Hawk

Firelands was, as you might guess, quite fiery. All three mounts associated with Firelands are pretty awesome, but the rarest is the Pureblood Fire Hawk which drops from the final boss of the raid, Ragnaros. Alysrazor from the same raid drops a mount similar to the Fire Hawk, but it’s smaller and also can’t fly. A purple version of the Fire Hawk, Corrupted Fire Hawk, is also available from Firelands for completing all of its related achievements.
The Pureblood Fire Hawk is a popular World of Warcraft mount for any transmogs involving fire – fire mages, I’m looking at you. This is one I’ve been after for a while; I dip into Firelands now and again to see if I can grab it. It’s available on all difficulties, but again I recommend going straight in for 25 man heroic which is easily farmable at level 110.
Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent

World boss Sha of Anger probably spends less than 1% of its time actually alive. Despite the mount it drops being lootable only once a week per character, there is always at least one player waiting for it to spawn. The mount they’re farming is the Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent – the second serpent in this list. We’ve gone from a translucent starry see-through serpent to the exact opposite; a dark, brooding looking serpent with bright tips – typical of Pandaria’s sha menace.
Sha of Anger is easy to farm by taking the portal to Pandaria in Dalaran and flying north into Kun-lai Summit. Coordinates 54,64 is where it will spawn once every 15 minutes. It used to have multiple spawn points which made it difficult to get to in time. Thankfully, last year Blizzard gave Sha of Anger a singular spawn point. Since then, general chat is less likely to be filled with profanity every 15 minutes because a player killed the Sha of Anger before anyone else got there.
Felblaze Infernal

You can always bet your bottom dollar on awesome-looking World of Warcraft mounts dropping from final raid bosses. Gul’dan in The Nighthold drops the Hellfire Infernal mount on mythic difficulty, but with a full group the drop chance is 100%. However on normal and heroic difficulty, Gul’dan drops the much rarer Felblaze Infernal; this green version of the mount doesn’t have a 100% drop chance – far from it.
This is very much a Legion mount; it shares the look of many enemies you encountered during the expansion. If you’re a Warlock using your own Infernal pet, then this can look like a mummy/daddy infernal. I toyed with putting Argus’ mount onto this list, but it shares the same drop system as Gul’dan’s mythic mount; also it’s fiendishly ugly.
Kor’kron Juggernaut

Unfortunately this mount is from a raid that is so long, arduous, boring, overwrought, and just the worst Siege of Ogrimmar. Kor’kron Juggernaut though is a metal scorpion with a drill for one claw, a saw as the other, and a laser for a tail! That’s it, that’s all I need to say on this mount. Goodbye.
To get this mount, you need to kill final boss Garrosh Hellscream in Siege of Ogrimmar, but you also need to do it on mythic, and there’s an extremely low drop chance. This can only be farmed once per week per character as well. When this raid first came out I completed maybe two wings on LFR difficulty, and Galakras was enough for me not to stick around. I went in here with a guildie last year to go in for the mount, and boy I don’t regret taking a break during the raid’s original release. It was a long, drawn out send off for a long, drawn out expansion.
