How to Avoid Wasps and Tarantulas in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Can’t get away from those pesky wasps and tarantulas in Animal Crossing: New Horizons? Here’s how to avoid them.

Two of the most despicable things in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are wasps hiding in trees and the tarantulas coming out at night to pounce on you. Of course, these things aren’t exactly new in this instalment, but they’re still aggravating.

If you find yourself constantly getting stung or attacked by these horrific beasts, here’s what you do.

You’ll only encounter wasps when you’re shaking or chopping trees. There’s always a chance a wasp’s nest is going to come tumbling out, and with it, a swarm of angry wasps. It’s a good idea to always have your bug net in your hand when you’re shaking trees. In that case, if a swarm appears, you can quickly turn, thrust your net forward and catch them. If you do catch them, wasps sell at the chop for a pretty hefty price, so it’s always worth trying.

Unfortunately when you’re chopping trees, you can’t also have your net ready to go. There’s only a short window to pull out your net, but if you have your net quick-equipped, you may be able to quickly change from your axe to your net to catch them. Otherwise it’s swollen-eye disease for you.

If all else fails, you can always run. Wasps are fast, though, so if you put one step out of line, you’re likely to get caught and stung. If you’re near a building, quickly head inside and the wasps will be gone when you exit. Just don’t try to go into a neighbour’s house when they’re not home.

As for tarantulas, these big suckers will wander around outside on the ground at night. If you happen to be walking or running nearby you before you spot them, they’ll charge at you, taking you by surprise. If a tarantula happens to catch you, you’ll pass out, and wake up on your door step.

They’re quite persistent, so will chase you for some time. Like wasps, you can head inside a building to get away from it – but it’s likely it’ll still be hanging around somewhere on your island when you go back outside. If you manage to see a tarantula before it’s had time to charge at you, slowly, slowly walk towards it. It’ll raise up on its hind legs, but as long as you don’t move forward in that time, it’ll go back down, staying in place. Keep creeping up on it, until you’re in range where you can catch it with your net. Quickly swipe it. If you miss, it’ll chase you, so be prepared to RUN!

Unfortunately, there’s not many ways to totally avoid these creepy crawlies so just keep your wits about you. It’s also handy to keep a bag of medicine in your inventory at all times in case you do get stung by a wasp.

Becca knew that she would be addicted to video games for the rest of her life when she saw the first pixelated zombie shambling across her TV screen while playing Resident Evil 3. She particularly enjoys being scared, laughing until she cries, or just plain crying while experiencing games. When she isn't playing games she loves spoiling her cat Usagi and eating any kind of sushi she can find.
