If you’re playing Returnal, you might be wondering how to save your game. Well, we’ve got good news and bad news.
Let’s start with the bad news first: you’re not missing anything hidden in the options. There is no way to save your game in Returnal. You just can’t.
That means if you’re mid-run, you can’t quit the game to pick up where you left off later. If you quit, you’ll start back at your ship, on a brand new run. Unfortunately, that means the same goes should your console crash or your power cuts out. Let’s hope neither of those things happen.
The good news is that Returnal does auto-save as you play. To some extent, anyway. If you’ve just beaten the first boss, you’re never going to have to fight it again, because the game remembers you’ve done that. It also remembers certain upgrades and pick-ups you find – like the house key, or the melee weapon, or the ability to swim. Once you’ve found those items, they’re locked in your permanent upgrades.
We’d recommend always finishing up your run before turning off the game to ensure all those permanent things do save, though. If you really do need to leave your console before finishing your run, all you can do is pause the game or put your console into rest mode.
