Epic Has Launched Fortnite’s Latest Heavily Cube-Based Season

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 8 is here and so are an awful lot of cubes.

Sadly, this isn’t the Hellraiser/Fortnite crossover we were hoping for, though there’s always Dead by Daylight. Instead, the mysterious glowing cubes, looking for all the world like a purple Borg vessel, are the fallout from Operation: Sky Fire, which concluded Season 7.

They’re not for decoration, either – they’re part of an otherworldly invasion which could warp Fortnite’s world and, if they’re not stopped, no-one will be left to dress as Ariana Grande and shoot Superman in the face.

Here’s what’s been revealed so far:

  • The cubes create Sideways Anomalies, which in turn feature Sideways monsters, best tackled with the Sideways Rifle and Sideways Minigun. The Sideways, in a clear nod to Stranger Things, is the name of the monstrous other realm.
  • The mothership, which crash landed during Season 7, is out of comission but you can still pick up Shadow Stones from its wreckage, which will let you become a shadow-like apparition.
  • A couple of old weapons will be returning, the Automatic Sniper Rifle and Harpoon Gun. Players are also encouraged to bring bars to Turret Station construction sites, to fight the menace.

Is that it? Don’t count on it. Yes, you can find a few more details on Epic’s website, but we’re expecting things to escalate, with Fortnite dialling up the invasions until everyone’s ready to pitch in. Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 8, dubbed “Cubed”, should be live now across all platforms.
